Carol's Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas

Famous Chatham Hydrangea House
Cape Cod is noted for its many colorful Hydrangea plants. Carol has always favored these Hydrangea flowering plants for her garden. She started with 3 Nikko Blue, macrophylla and 1 Tree Form paniculata in the front yard. The Tree Form plant died after a few years. It had a disease or was damaged at the trunk/root and finally died.

Hyannis Port
Today we have 29 total   Hydrangea plants, 20 different varieties in our gardens. Hydrangeas can generally be broken down into two main groups: mopheads and lacecaps.

"Coerulea", H macrophylla (Lacecap)

Medium to light blue lacecap flower
We have 1 of these Hydrangeas on the south side protected from the sun by a large Maple tree. The lack of light makes it difficult to obtain a bright photo.

Alpengluhen H. macrophylla

We have 3 of these plants on the sunny south side. They are very colorful, each plant can have flowers with a variety of colors ranging from blue to purple to lavender. They are slow growing, small plants.

One plant with multicolored flowers is so cool.

Smooth Hydrangea, H. arborescens

These Hydrangeas were a mistake. When we bought an Annabelle Hydrangea we found it had 3 branches coming out of the root ball. Two of these stalks were Smooth Hydrangeas and one was the Annabelle. We separated them into 3 plants, 2 Smooth and 1 Annabelle. These 2 are our least favorite Hydrangea.

Preziosa H. serrata

Mature flower is a light blue
There is 1 of these on the somewhat shaded south side of the garden. These are very similar to the Pink Beauty, on the east side of our garden. The flowers go from white to a light blue.

Nikko Blue, H. macrophylla

There are 3 plants in this photo
Nikko Blue, we have 4 of this variety. 3 on the north west side and 1 on the north east side of the garden. These can be large and covered with flowers. They are very sensitive to winter kill. I attempt to cover them in winter to prevent buds from drying.

A blue/yellow flower

Flowers are blue, NW flowers are a solid blue and NE are a blue and yellow. Apparently the soil PH is effecting the flower color, as is the case for most H. macrophylla.

Mild winter, full blooms

"Pia" H. macrophylla

Pia is a very small colorful Hydrangea. We have 1 of these on the north, protected by the wall and 3 large Nikko Blue plants. It has a very pretty pink mophead flower.

Cityline Paris H. macrophylla

Cityline Paris is also a very small colorful Hydrangea. We have 1 adjacent to the "Pia". It has intense pink-red summer flowers, which are long lasting and change to green as they age.

Glowing Embers H. macrophylla

Starting to flower

Glowing Embers is my favorite of all the Hydrangeas. The multicolors, changing colors during the changing of the seasons is great.

Multicolor flower

The only draw back is each year it may or may not bloom. Being macrophylla, mophead these plants only bloom on old wood. Winter kill from harsh winters kills all or many of the blooms.

Multicolored Flowers

But when there is a mild winter the reward is a multicolored, multiflowering plant.

Fall brings more colorful rewards, the flowers turn this reddish brown.

Lady In Red H. macrophylla (Lace Cap)

Lady In Red multicolored Lace Cap flower.

Lady In Red; red stalks.

"Annabelle", H. aborescens

Carol's Favorite

huge (8–12″) round heads of pure white blooms

"Blue Billow", H macrophylla serrata (Lacecap)

"Blue Billow" is a very easy Hydrangea to grow. It blooms profusely every year, and even propagates itself. We have made several plants from the original plants.

"Little Lime", "Jane", H. paniculata

"Little Lime" is a newer Hydrangea to our garden. It has finally established itself last summer and should be larger and have more blooms this season.

Little Lime, green flower

 Climbing Hydrangea", H. anomala petiolaris

Climbing Hydrangea is a fast growing plant that needs to be trimmed each year to control its growth and prevent it from taking over.  Two plants are planted on the North side along a 6' fence.

"Blue Bird", H.  serrata (Lace-cap)

"Blue Bird is a lace-cap hydrangea that is planted on North side under 2 Climbing Hydrangeas. It does well most years, plenty of blooms, and moderate growth.

 "Pinky Winky", H. paniculata

"Pinky Winky" is very interesting Hydrangea.  It has grown well through the years. Two years ago we had very little rain and the plant started to suffer, lost half of the plant.  Last year with a new irrigation system it did well and I hope it will be back to its normal growth.
